The Central Board of Direct Taxes has given a big relief to the taxpayers.
In a welcome move, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced a significant relief for certain taxpayers who were facing delays in Income Tax Return (ITR) processing. The update provides extra time for specific cases where returns were filed but remained unprocessed due to technical or administrative delays.
This decision comes as a big relief to many, especially those who were waiting for refunds or processing updates beyond the usual timeframe.
The CBDT has extended the deadline to process ITRs filed for Assessment Years (AY) 2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24, in cases where returns were:
Filed electronically but remained unprocessed,
Stuck due to mismatches, technical errors, or pending validations,
Awaiting verification under Section 143(1) of the Income Tax Act.
The extended deadline allows the Income Tax Department to process such returns till 31st October 2025 (or as notified), thereby reducing panic for affected taxpayers.
This relief is aimed at:
Taxpayers whose ITRs were submitted on time but still show as “under processing”
Individuals who faced technical issues with e-verification or Aadhaar-PAN linking
Taxpayers eligible for refunds but haven’t received them due to unprocessed ITRs
Salaried employees and small business owners with minor errors or mismatches
Over the last few assessment years, many taxpayers have complained about their ITRs being:
Stuck in processing for months
Marked “invalid” due to issues like delayed verification
Pending because of auto-generated notices or system errors
The extension by CBDT ensures that these cases don’t require re-filing or appeals, and are handled within the extended timeline without extra burden on the taxpayer.
If your ITR is still showing as “under processing” or you’ve received no updates, here’s what you should do:
Log in to the Income Tax Portal – https://www.incometax.gov.in
Go to ‘View Filed Returns’ under e-File > Income Tax Returns
Check the status of your return (e.g., “Processed”, “Under Processing”)
If it’s still pending, no need to re-file—wait till the extended date
Ensure e-verification is done, if not already completed
| Event | Deadline |
|---|---|
| ITR Processing Extension for AY 2021-24 | Up to 31st October 2025 (tentative) |
This move by CBDT is a proactive step to reduce unnecessary hardship for honest taxpayers, especially those affected by system issues or procedural bottlenecks. If you or someone you know has a return stuck in limbo, this relief could ensure that refunds are credited and compliance is maintained—without any fresh action required.
